Flat-lay

A flat-lay is a product photo of a garment laid flat on a surface and photographed from directly above.

Also called: flat lay photography · lay-down

Flat-lays are the cheapest way to photograph clothing: no model, no mannequin, just a clean surface, even light and a camera on a stand. They show colour, print and details well.

Their weakness is fit and drape. A laid-down dress says little about length on the body, and a folded sweater hides the shoulder line — which is why many shops pair flat-lays with on-model images.

In Atelier Noir

Atelier Noir takes a flat-lay as input and returns the garment worn by a model, in a set of your choosing. Several pieces on our garment pages started as flat-lays.
